Common questions
How does the verdict work?
You share a YouTube link or type a show name. We pull the public transcript or metadata, send it to Google Gemini for analysis across seven safety filters (unkind language, violence, brat behavior, creep factor, scary factor, overstimulation, consumerism), and return one of three verdicts: Clean, Sus, or Hard Pass. Alongside the safety screen, we score what the content feeds (curiosity, story, movement, and other growth dimensions), which powers the Brain Food side of the app. Each verdict is personalized per kid based on their age and your custom filter thresholds.
The app says "no transcript available." What now?
Some YouTube videos don't have captions and don't have audio our backend can transcribe. When that happens, we tell you up front instead of guessing. Try the original-language version, a different upload of the same content, or paste a different link.
It says my video is in a non-English language.
Today we only screen English-language content. If the audio is dubbed or originally in another language, we'll flag it instead of returning a wrong verdict. Multi-language support is on the roadmap.
How many screenings do I get?
Your first 7 days are a free trial with 5 screenings a day. After the trial, the free tier drops to 1 a day. Pro is unlimited for $9.99 a month.
Is Pro really unlimited?
For any real household use, yes. There's a fair-use ceiling behind it, set high enough that you'd have to be screening around the clock to reach it, and it exists to stop scripted traffic rather than parents. If you ever bump into a limit doing something legitimate, email us — we'll sort it out, and we'll tell you where the line sits for your account.
How do I cancel my Pro subscription?
Settings → Subscription → Manage Subscription. That opens iOS's subscription management screen where you can cancel or change plans. You keep Pro features until the end of the current billing period. You can also cancel directly in the iOS Settings app under Apple ID → Subscriptions.
I cancelled by mistake. How do I restore Pro?
Settings → Subscription → Restore Purchases. As long as you're signed into the same Apple ID that purchased, your Pro entitlement comes back. If it doesn't, email support with the date of purchase and we'll sort it.
I deleted my account but I'm still being charged.
Account deletion erases your account, kid profiles, and scan history from our systems. It does not cancel an active iOS subscription. Apple requires you to cancel that separately in iOS Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions. If you're seeing charges after cancelling there, contact Apple Support; refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple.
How do I change my kids' filter sensitivities?
Open the Kiddos tab and tap your kid's name. Their settings open with sliders for each of the seven filters, which set how strict the verdict is for that kid. Pro users get per-kid custom thresholds; free users use age-based defaults.
The Share Extension says "Quick setup needed."
Before your first screening we show a short heads-up about how the AI works and ask you to agree to the Privacy Policy. Sharing stays disabled until then. Open Strangey Dangey, check the box on the heads-up screen, tap Continue, then try sharing again.
How do I delete my account?
Settings → Account → Delete Account. This removes your account, every kid profile, and every screening you've ever run from our systems, and revokes Sign in with Apple. The action can't be undone.
What does Strangey Dangey send to Google Gemini?
The public captions or transcript and basic public metadata (title, channel, series and episode info) for the content you ask us to screen. We do not send your name, email, kid names, device identifiers, or any personally identifiable information. Per Google's terms for the paid Gemini API, your inputs are not used to train Google's models. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.
Does the app work on iPad?
Not in v1. The iPhone build runs on iPad in compatibility mode but isn't designed for the larger screen. Native iPad support is on the roadmap.
Where do I read the legal stuff?
